Montana ranch portraits

Forty years deserves
better than a selfie.

Long marriages are our specialty. We photograph couples on working ranchland at golden hour - the two of you, the light, maybe the horses - and deliver wall pieces that look like the marriage felt. Forty years deserves better than a selfie.

  • ◆Golden-hour sessions, two guides on horseback optional
  • ◆Wall-art first: framed pieces built to last generations
  • ◆Horses, dogs, and pickup trucks welcome
  • ◆Twenty-five years of Montana weather calls

Why ranch portraits

The land was at the wedding. It belongs in the anniversary.

Couples who have been married thirty, forty, fifty years did not meet over brunch downtown. They met somewhere with weather in it - a ranch, a fair, a church basement. The land is a character in the marriage, and it should be in the portrait.

We work at golden hour because that is when Montana is honest. Your grandmother's wedding pictures were probably made in flat noon light by a nervous cousin. We have two and a half hours, twenty-five years of weather calls, and no desire to hurry you.

The outfit

Ranch hands with cameras

Owner & photographer

Wayne Kessler

Ran guided rides in Paradise Valley before trading horses for lenses, then brought the horses back as assistants. PPA certified; reads clouds the way other photographers read light meters.

Photographer

Emma Donaldson

Grew up on a horse operation outside Livingston. Specializes in the walk-and-talk portrait: couples moving together, which after forty years they do extremely well.

Location & livestock

Hollis Crane

Owns the string of horses and the good dog. Places every animal upwind of the lens and knows which pasture is wearing which light in every month of the year.

Print studio

Anna Reyes

Runs the framing and canvas operation. Will talk you out of the small size, once, politely, and has never been contradicted by a delivery day.

How it works

From inquiry to delivery

01

01

The call

Tell us the anniversary, the story, and whether the horses are family. We will know the right pasture by the end of the call.

02

02

Scout & wardrobe

We walk the location with you (or by video), and send a short wardrobe guide written for Montana light - which colors work and which fight it.

03

03

Golden hour

Two and a half unhurried hours. We start stiff, we end up swapping stories; the pictures come from the second half.

04

04

The wall piece

Proof gallery in 14 days. We help choose the frame size for the wall it is actually going on, which is a different conversation than most people expect.

Client stories

What our clients say

"Forty years in June, and Wayne put us on horseback like it was 1979. The canvas over the fireplace makes our granddaughter announce her engagement plans every visit."

Jim & Carol T. · 40th anniversary, Big Timber

"Emma had us walk the fence line and just talk. Somewhere in there she took the picture of us that our kids fought over. It was not the one where we smiled at the camera."

Ray & Doris M. · 52 years, Livingston

"I booked the session for my parents as a gift. My father, a man of few words, said the light made them look the way they felt. High praise. The horse cooperated too."

Frequently asked questions

Of course. The horses are optional scenery with excellent manners. Plenty of our best portraits involve nothing but a fence line and the two of you.
Wayne makes the call the day before, with twenty-five years of Montana experience. Reschedules are free, and his cloud-reading record is genuinely better than the forecast.
Bring the dog. Hollis keeps liver in a vest pocket for exactly this, and the good dog has appeared in more of our wall pieces than any horse.
Yes - the Legacy Weekend is built for it, and any Ranch Session can add a family grouping in the last half hour for $150.
Gladly, within reason - Paradise Valley to the Shields is home turf. Beyond that we quote travel simply: mileage and one night if needed.
Anna will ask you to send a photo of the wall. That conversation, had honestly, is why people end up happy instead of politely regretful about the 11x14.
